Posture and Balance – How to Stand Correctly and Practice Balance

In one of the Exercise Stations at 50 Plus Fitness Center in Delray Beach, Chris Mazzola, Certified Trainer and Owner, has been emphasizing “Step… Stop… Step…” along with correct posture as a necessary exercise for helping us maintain balance and to be able to catch ourselves if we start to trip and fall.

After doing the preceding video where Chris demonstrates how to get up off the floor, I asked him to demonstrate and explain correct posture and the reasons for the”Step… Stop… Step…” exercise. Again, thank you, Chris.

How to Get Yourself Up From the Floor

Recently, I had to get down on the floor to look for something under the bed. When I went to get up I found myself stuck, having challenges. I did drag myself to a position where I could support myself on the edge of the bed to get up.

Nevertheless, later that day when I went to exercise at 50 Plus Fitness Center in Delray Beach, I mentioned it to Chris Mazzola, owner and trainer. I asked if there was a specific way to get up from the floor or ground, if outside, and he started demonstrating. I then asked him to do another demo, which he kindly did so I could video it for my own reference in the future, and yours.

Give this video is on my iPhone I’ll be sure to have it with me whenever I might have the need for it. I suggest you bookmark the video so you, too, can have it ready available.

UPDATE:  The next day, I practiced, easily getting up 3 times, without even needing the support of the bed.  I realized that most of what had been going on with me was “fear”. Seeing the process eased the fear, whatever was causing it.  I have been regularly exercising at 50 Plus for 11 plus years, so my arm and leg strength are good. Thank you, Chris.

Strengthening Weak Arm and Shoulder Muscles

Once again, I called on Chris for some answers. A friend had been caring for her young grandson and began complaining of shoulder pain.

Always wanting to help people, I brought the question to Chris Mazzola of 50 Plus Fitness Center in Delray Beach. He went immediately into suggesting that it might be simply that she was straining unused muscles.

He then went on to share some possible simple exercises for strengthening weak arm and shoulder muscles.  As always Chris has a wealth of simple tips for strength exercises for Seniors, or anyone else.  It’s simply that supporting health and fitness in seniors is Chris Mazzola’s passion.

Bending to Pick up Objects

Over the years, I’ve often found that if I bend a certain way, I’ll get an ache on one side of my lower back. There was an upcoming project which required extensive bending.  How blessed I felt to be able to ask Chris Mazzola, Certified Fitness Trainer, Owner of 50 Plus Fitness Center, for instructions on the proper way of bending.

Always gracious and accomodating, Chris gave me permission to video him demonstrating the correct way.  I, and now you, can go to this video at any time to check it out. As simple as it may seem, I do find myself, in my senior years, needing to refresh my memory from time-to-time.

If you find this, or any of the other exercises, on these pages helpful, please let Chris know in the comment section  below the post.

Exercise While Watching TV

One of the things I appreciate about Chris Mazzola of 50 Plus Fitness Center in Delray Beach, FL is his knowledge and creativity. He is always open to sharing alternative ways of developing strength and balance. His passion is directed toward the health of seniors and senior fitness. On the other hand his directions are easy to understand and suggestions quite simple to follow.

In this video he demonstrates how we can strengthen muscles as we watch television.

Sitting and Standing Exercises for Strength and Weight-Bearing – Push Ups

One of the ways I have fun with exercise is by doing rotations on equipment at 50+ Fitness Center. Chris Mazzola, Certified Fitness Trainer, has equipment set up and spaced out for strength and balance. The fun part, for me, is the interaction with other exercisers as we move around.

It’s always fun to joke around and interact with Chris as I’m exercising. And, of course, it’s always fun to watch other people exercise. One of the exercises I enjoy is using my iPhone video camera to record Chris sharing important points on various exercises.

I love, when I am unable to get into 50+ Fitness pulling out my iPhone and following one of the videos I recorded of Chris. I particular love the “easy” way of doing push-ups using my Kitchen Counter. For the company I like, I can simply listen to Chris or the background or use my TV.

Here Chris is for you to see, demonstrating push-ups and chair squats to use as strength and weight-bearing exercises.

Most Fun Ways To Exercise

By Roberto Sedycias

One great way to stay fit is through the art of dance. Dancing is not just a beautiful art form, but also a rigorous way of staying in shape and doing it in a way that makes you keep yourself fit and in shape. And since dancing is so diverse and different, you can choose a style and method that makes you feel good about what you are doing and also helps you shed pounds and keep yourself healthy. Nowadays learning to dance is easy, what with so many classes offered on it, also videos are out to help you do moves, and you can even get Wii games that specialize in the art of teaching you to work out through the rigorous moves of dance.

Whether you want to do ballet or salsa or some hip hop or country funk, you can take up a dance that suits your preferences and work out to your favorite tunes and music. You can work out your leg muscles with the leaps and stretches, work out your arms with all the complicated stretching, work out your torso and abs, and really get a full body work out, not to mention keeping your heart in shape and fit with all the leaping and jumping. Plus, dancing not only keeps you fit but gives you something to do with other people, too, so that you can work out with others in a way that won’t even feel like you’re working out or working at all, but instead like you are having an endless party with friends.

Another way you can make working out fun is by having workout parties. This means, you and a group of your friends, get together and make it a club to work out. Agree on a time of day and place to meet and do things in a group, whether it be running the track together a couple miles or playing a rousing game of soccer, or even riding bikes across town. Doing it with a group will help you all keep each other focused and on track so that when one person doesn’t feel like doing it anymore, the others will keep him or her in shape and will motivate them.

And when you feel like it just doesn’t matter, someone can lift you up and help you stand on your own, too, so that you can stay in shape and not give up, because staying steadfast to a goal like that is always hard. Also, doing it with others can be more fun and might have you looking forward to it, as you can see your friends and also be using your time to be doing something constructive and valuable to your body and overall fitness and wellness.

Staying fit is extremely important no matter how you decide to go about doing it. You can go through hikes in exotic places, or you can go to roller rinks or ice skating places, or to a community pool where you can swim, or go cross country via bike, but no matter what you are doing just make sure you are doing something because keeping yourself in shape and staying fit is the only way you can make sure that you live longer and live better.
